MSWITCH GUIDE · REMORTGAGES
Product transfer or remortgage: what is the difference?
Understand staying with your lender versus moving to a new one.
Updated 19 October 2026 · General information
Two routes to review
A product transfer is a new deal with your existing lender. A remortgage generally replaces your mortgage with a different lender. The amount of administration and the costs can differ.
Compare the relevant options
Review the rate, fees, flexibility and borrowing requirements together. A convenient switch is not automatically the most suitable, and a new lender is not automatically better. Additional borrowing or other changes may require further assessment.
Your starting checklist
- Your existing lender’s available offer
- Relevant alternative products accessible through your adviser
- Product, advice, legal and valuation costs
- Overpayment limits and early repayment charges
