Early repayment charges: what to check before switching
Avoid confusing a lower rate with a lower total switching cost.
Updated 19 October 2026 · General information
Understand the charge before deciding
Some mortgages charge you for repaying early or making overpayments beyond the permitted allowance. Check your own offer and ask the lender to confirm the amount and end date.
Put the charge in the comparison
An early repayment charge can change whether a switch makes financial sense. Consider the timing and all relevant costs rather than looking only at the new monthly payment. Do not cancel existing arrangements before the details have been checked.
Your starting checklist
- Charge amount and expiry date
- Any permitted overpayment allowance
- Product and exit fees
- The proposed start date of the new deal
